Village of Grogan's Mill
Grogan's Mill Village, the first Village of The Woodlands, is bordered by The Woodlands Town Center to the north, Interstate 45 to the east, the northern reaches of unincorporated Montgomery County commonly referred to as Spring to the south and the Village of Panther Creek to the west along the eastern shore of Lake Woodlands
In the early 1960's George P. Mitchell, a Texas wildcatter and oil and real estate entrepreneur, envisioned a master-planned community that would include as many jobs as homes. After several years of planning, involving ecological specialists, and acquisition of tracts of land in Montgomery County, construction in what became The Woodlands actually began in 1972.
At 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, 1974, a flag-raising ceremony at the original Information Center in the Village of Grogan's Mill marked the first official act of the Grand Opening. When opened, The Woodlands consisted of a few families living in Settlers Corner, a conference center and country club, the Information Center, the Wharf shopping area, 19 model homes, 50 apartments, three office buildings, and several recreation amenities, all in Grogan's Mill Village. Other villages followed.
Since the opening in 1974, The Woodlands has grown rapidly in population and in amenities. The Woodlands Hospital (now Memorial-Hermann) opened in 1985; the Hardy Toll Road opened in 1987; the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion was added in the early 90's; The Woodlands Mall opened in 1994 and was greatly expanded in 2003; Anadarko and other large companies have located (and continue to locate) in The Woodlands, many of them in the area of the Town Center. Residents of the Village of Grogan's Mill have easy access to all of the job locations, shopping opportunities, dining experiences, recreational and entertainment venues, and medical facilities. In addition, residents can reach I-45, the Hardy Toll Road, and Bush Intercontinental Airport within a few minutes.
As The Woodlands continues to grow on the north, the west, and the south, residents of Grogan's Mill remain ideally situated to enjoy all of the advantages of living in this master-planned community.
